Henry Judah Heimlich (1920-2016) was a renowned American thoracic surgeon and medical researcher, primarily recognized for inventing the Heimlich maneuver, a method of abdominal thrusts designed to prevent choking. In addition to this life-saving technique, he also created the Heimlich Chest Drain Valve and the Heimlich Flutter Valve. Throughout his career, Heimlich published numerous medical books, including “Heimlichâs Maneuvers: My Seventy Years of Lifesaving Innovation.” Alongside his other accomplishments, he co-founded the Heimlich Institute, which advocates for research on malaria therapy as a potential treatment for cancer and HIV/AIDS. Heimlich passed away in 2016 due to complications from a heart attack.
