George Draper Dayton (March 6, 1857 â February 18, 1938) was an American businessman and philanthropist, best known for founding Dayton’s department store, which eventually evolved into Target Corporation. Born in Clifton Springs, New York, Dayton began his career by establishing the Goodfellow Dry Goods store in Minneapolis. He later renamed it Dayton’s Dry Goods Company, and ultimately, the Dayton Company. In 1902, he founded Target Corporation, initially called Goodfellow Dry Goods. Dayton was also well-known for his philanthropy and significant contributions to local charities.
