Francis Scott Key, an American lawyer, author, and amateur poet, is best known for writing the lyrics for the American national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” During the War of 1812, he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry while detained on a British ship. Inspired by the American flag’s resilience, he penned the poem “Defence of Fort M’Henry,” which was later set to music and officially adopted as the national anthem in 1931.
Key’s contributions extend beyond his iconic anthem. He had a successful law career, served in the Maryland House of Delegates, and was actively involved in his community. A devout Episcopalian and Freemason, he served as the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Maryland.
Key’s legacy endures through his enduring work, which continues to evoke patriotism and national pride. His name remains etched in American history as a symbol of resilience and the power of words to inspire a nation.
