Eddie ‘Rochester’ Anderson, an American actor and comedian, was best known for portraying Rochester Van Jones, Jack Benny’s valet on The Jack Benny Program. His distinctive gravelly voice, which became his trademark, developed early in life when his vocal cords were ruptured as he sold newspapers in San Francisco. Anderson appeared in well-known films such as Gone with the Wind, Cabin in the Sky, and What’s Cookin’, and received an NAACP Image Award for his role in Sanford and Son. Despite his accomplishments, he experienced racism and discrimination throughout his life. Anderson passed away in 1977 due to complications from severe asthma.
