Ebenezer Elmer

Ebenezer Elmer was an American physician and politician who served in the U.S. Congress from 1801 to 1807. He was also a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War and recorded his experiences in fourteen volumes.

Ebenezer Elmer (1752-1843) was a prominent American physician, soldier, and politician during the Revolutionary War period. He is well-known for his involvement in crucial battles such as Princeton and Monmouth. As the Surgeon General of the New Jersey militia, Elmer played a significant role in the war and later contributed to the development of the Articles of Confederation as a member of the Continental Congress.

Besides his military and political roles, Elmer was instrumental in advancing education in New Jersey, particularly through his efforts in establishing the College of New Jersey, now known as Princeton University. He also held positions in the New Jersey legislature and served as the mayor of Bridgeton, New Jersey.

Elmer was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, a fraternal organization for Revolutionary War officers, where he actively participated in meetings and supported its charitable endeavors.

Although not widely known, Elmer served as a lieutenant in the 3rd New Jersey Regiment in the Continental Service and meticulously documented military orders and personal observations about the Revolutionary War in fourteen volumes.
