Diahann Carroll was a renowned American actress, singer, and model, best known for her groundbreaking role in the TV series “Julia.” In this series, she became the first African-American woman to play a non-stereotypical role, breaking away from the typical portrayal of domestic workers. Some of her other notable works include films such as “Carmen Jones,” “Porgy and Bess,” and “Claudine,” as well as Broadway productions like “House of Flowers” and “No Strings.” Throughout her career, she received various awards, including a Tony Award, a Golden Globe, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the NAACP.
Carroll was also a breast cancer survivor, having been diagnosed in 1997. After undergoing a lumpectomy and radiation treatment, she became an advocate for breast cancer awareness and urged women to get regular mammograms.
Sadly, Diahann Carroll passed away on October 4, 2019, at 84 years old. Her legacy as a pioneering actress and her significant contributions to the entertainment industry will always be remembered.
