Cliff Edwards, also known as “Ukulele Ike,” was a renowned American musician, singer, and actor who gained fame for his distinctive high-pitched voice and portrayal of Jiminy Cricket in Disney’s 1940 film, Pinocchio. He also popularized the iconic song “When You Wish upon a Star” from the same movie. Edwards appeared in several other films, such as Hollywood Revue of 1929, Good News, and His Girl Friday, and was inducted into the Disney Legends in 1992. As an avid ukulele player, he developed a unique playing style that incorporated scat singing and released numerous popular ukulele-based songs during the 1920s and 1930s.
