Thelma McQueen, also known as Butterfly McQueen, was a renowned American actress and performer, most recognized for her portrayal of Prissy in the 1939 classic film, Gone with the Wind. Initially starting her career as a dancer, she later transitioned to Broadway and eventually to film. McQueen’s other notable film appearances include Cabin in the Sky, Duel in the Sun, and Mildred Pierce. As one of the first African-American women to sign a contract with MGM, she was also a political activist and a member of the Actors Equity Association. In addition to her acting career, McQueen was a gifted writer and inventor, penning a humorous autobiography and obtaining several patents for her inventions. Despite her accomplishments, she faced financial challenges and maintained a modest lifestyle.
