Anne of Cleves (German: Anna von Kleve; 1515 – 16 July 1557) was the fourth wife of King Henry VIII and served as Queen of England for a brief period from 6 January to 12 July 1540. Little is known about her life prior to 1527 when she was betrothed to Francis, Duke of Bar, son and heir of Antoine, Duke of Lorraine, although the marriage never took place. In March 1539, discussions began for Anne to marry Henry, and she was ultimately selected as his bride from a pool of potential candidates. However, their union was annulled after just six months due to the King’s dissatisfaction with her appearance. Despite the annulment, Anne remained in England as one of the wealthiest women in the country, receiving several properties, including Hever Castle. She maintained positive relations with the English court and King Henry VIII until his death in 1547.
